Parents’ views on students’ use of AI in schoolwork

Parents  hold nuanced views on students’ use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) for school assignments.

A survey of 318 parents released that many respondents are open to AI as a learning tool, but want clear limits to prevent the technology from replacing students’ own thinking and work.

The research was designed and conducted by the author during a summer research internship.

The author created and distributed an online questionnaire in August 2026.

The 318 respondents were parents of middle and high school students.

Because the survey was not based on a nationally representative random sample, the findings describe the views of the parents surveyed rather than parents as a whole.

The survey explored how parents of middle and high school students view the use of generative AI in school assignments.

It focused on acceptable levels of AI use, expected benefits and risks, and the need for guidance from families and schools.

Overall, 43.7 percent of respondents expressed a favorable attitude toward students using generative AI for schoolwork, while 15.1 percent were opposed.

However, 41.2 percent selected a neutral position, indicating that many respondents did not take a clearly positive or negative stance.

The results became clearer when respondents were asked about the extent to which students should be allowed to use AI.

The largest group, 41.5 percent, said AI could appropriately be used to explain concepts that students do not understand.

Another 36.2 percent found using AI to organize ideas for an assignment acceptable.

Together, these two responses accounted for 77.7 percent of participants.

Support dropped sharply when AI became more involved in producing a student’s actual work.

Only 13.2 percent considered using AI to polish writing acceptable, while a mere 3.8 percent accepted using AI to create a final answer or result.

Meanwhile, 5.3 percent said students should not use generative AI for school assignments at all.

These results suggest that many respondents are more comfortable with AI as a tool for understanding and organizing ideas than as a tool that completes assignments for students.

The parents  surveyed also acknowledged several potential educational benefits.

According to the survey, 55.7 percent identified improving expression or polishing language as a benefit, while 53.1 percent pointed to AI’s role in organizing information.

At the same time, concerns about students’ learning remained prominent.

The most commonly reported concern, selected by 61 percent of respondents, was students submitting work without fully understanding it.

Another 60.4 percent were concerned that AI could reduce the amount of time students spend thinking independently, while 59.4 percent were concerned about students using AI without clearly indicating that they had done so.

The survey also highlighted demand for clearer rules.

More than half of respondents, 56.3 percent, indicated that they intended to establish rules for AI use at home.

The household guidance need score was 66.5, while the school guidance need score was 61.7.

Both were composite scores measured on a 0 to 100 scale.

Each score was calculated by averaging responses across five related survey items, with 0 representing the lowest level of perceived need for guidance and 100 representing the highest.

Notably, 64.8 percent supported guidance discouraging students from simply using AI- generated answers as their own.

Respondents’ own experience with AI also influenced their attitudes.

Among parents who reported using AI almost every day, 81.9 percent supported students’ use of AI for school assignments.

Among parents who had not used AI during the previous three months, the acceptance rate was only 9.1 percent.

The relationship between AI use frequency and acceptance showed a Spearman correlation of .561 with a p-value below .001.

While the study does not establish that using AI directly causes parents to become more  the results show a clear association between familiarity with AI and greater acceptance of its academic use.

Overall, the findings point toward conditional acceptance rather than unrestricted approval or outright rejection.

The surveyed parents appear willing to accept AI when it helps students understand concepts or develop ideas, but support becomes much weaker when AI begins replacing students’ own work.

As generative AI becomes increasingly embedded in education, the central question for families and schools may therefore be less about whether students should use AI at all and more about where the appropriate boundary should be drawn.
