Antony J. Blinken, The United States Secretary of State, had a phone conversation with Jin Park, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, after he had visited the People’s Republic of China on June 21,2023 to affirm that he had “a long fruitful conversation”.

Blinken said it was necessary to have a conversation with South Korea about the visit to China as soon as possible.

According to The United States Department of State, Blinken has conveyed the result of the conversation he had with China about Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (commonly known as North Korea) regarding the increasingly unstable and dangerous international environment.

Blinken added that he had “reconfirmed the importance of the relation between The United States and The Republic of Korea in maintaining the peace, security, and prosperity over the regions inside and outside of the Pacific Ocean.”

Park said that he “supports and appreciates the efforts that The United States makes to maintain international peace by having a conversation with China even in especially hard times.”

Beforehand, Blinken had visited China to make sure that he would maintain communication with high level officials in China such as Xi Jinping, The President of the People’s Republic of China, and Wang Yi, Former Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China; and Qin Gang, the current Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China.

On the other hand, the United States and the People’s Republic of China, as the two largest economies and the biggest military force in the world, have  conflicting interests over a number of international affairs.

Blinken has emphasized the peaceful settlement over the issues over the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China (China).

He also stated that China should act properly toward the issues over North Korea since China is one of the few countries that has a great influence over it.

The two countries are also involved in what we call the “trade war”, an economic conflict between the United States and China that began when former President of the United States Donald Trump had set tariffs and other trade barriers on China.

Semiconductor war was one of the biggest parts of the war and South Korea was highly involved in it since it was one of the countries where most of the semiconductor chips are manufactured.

Due to the fact that the United States and the People’s Republic of China are in a critical stage where the situations can escalate with a single issue, it was successful that Blinken had contacted Chinese officials and that the high officials were positive in keeping communicating with the United States in order to maintain the peace.

Since North Korea is becoming a big international issue due to its possession of nuclear weapons, it seems like the role of South Korea would grow to be more and more important especially during the time when the two big countries are in a huge conflict.
