LeBron James has officially signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, concluding his eight-season run with the Los Angeles Lakers.

James announced his decision to join Philadelphia on July 24.

He officially signed his contract with the team on July 26, and the 76ers announced his arrival on July 27.

Reports indicate that James agreed to a two-year, $8 million veteran-minimum contract with a player option for the second season.

The 76ers refrained from publicly disclosing the financial terms of the contract in their official announcement.

This move stands as one of the most significant transactions of the 2026 NBA offseason.

LeBron will play his 24th NBA season with the 76ers, making Philadelphia the fourth franchise he has played for after previously playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers.

Throughout his illustrious career, he has won four NBA championships and holds the title as the NBA's all-time leading scorer.

Philadelphia is entering the 2026–27 season with a significantly altered roster following several offseason moves.

James joins a roster that includes former NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid, All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, and recently acquired forward Jaylen Brown.

The addition of James provides Philadelphia with another experienced player as the team aims to compete for its first NBA championship in more than four decades.

Philadelphia last won the NBA Finals in 1983 and hasn’t advanced beyond the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs since 2001.

One of the most notable aspects of the signing is James' contract terms.

Rather than pursuing a maximum-value deal, James reportedly accepted a veteran-minimum contract.

The lower salary provides Philadelphia with greater financial flexibility while adding a player with 23 seasons of NBA experience.

The reported contract includes a player option after the first season, giving James the flexibility to decide whether to return for a second year.

LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds during the 2025–26 season with the Lakers.

He played 60 games during the season and was named to the All-NBA Second Team.

He also made his 22nd NBA All-Star appearance.

Despite continuing to produce at a high level at age 41, the Lakers were eliminated in the playoffs, leading to widespread speculation about whether James would retire or continue his career elsewhere.

His decision to join Philadelphia concluded weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future. 

James had informed the Lakers on June 30 that he would not return to the organization. 

Following this decision, he then considered his options before announcing Philadelphia as his next team on July 24.

The signing also opens the door for James to achieve another historic milestone.

He already owns NBA championships with the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers.

If Philadelphia wins the NBA title during his time, James would become the first player in league history to win championships with four different teams.

James' role in Philadelphia will also be an important part of the team's upcoming season. 

The 76ers feature several players capable of handling the ball and scoring, including Maxey and Brown, while Embiid remains a major part of the team's frontcourt.

James' passing ability and experience give head coach Nick Nurse another option for organizing the team's offense.

However, Philadelphia must also determine how its new roster will work together. 

James, Brown, Maxey, and Embiid have not previously played together, meaning the team will have to develop chemistry and establish roles during training camp and the beginning of the regular season.

James' age will also be a factor as he enters a record-setting 24th NBA season.

With training camp approaching, attention will shift toward how quickly James can adapt to his new teammates and the system under head coach Nick Nurse.

The addition of James gives Philadelphia one of the most experienced players in NBA history as the team gears up for the 2026–27 season.

His first season with the 76ers will provide an opportunity to see whether Philadelphia's major offseason changes can help the franchise move closer to its first NBA championship since 1983.
