New York schools face growing debate over AI in the classroom

In the spring of 2026, New York’s department of education released preliminary AI guidance, using a “traffic light” framework to sort which AI tools students and teachers could use freely.
This prompted nearly 6,500 public comments, with some parents calling for the district to pause AI use in schools altogether.
This reflects a nationwide debate in classrooms: is AI a powerful tool for learning, or just a growing problem?
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prevalent in schools, transforming the way students learn and teachers instruct.

Platforms like Khan Academy’s Khanmigo and Duolingo’s AI-powered lessons already dynamically adjust question difficulty in real time based on student performance.
According to research, some programs increase or decrease the difficulty of questions depending on how well a student is doing.
This adaptive approach allows students to progress at a pace that matches their understanding, helping struggling learners build foundational skills while also challenging more advanced students.
As a result, learning becomes more efficient and is better suited to individual needs.
Another key advantage is that AI can reduce the workload placed on teachers.
Many AI tools can grade assignments, identify errors, and provide immediate feedback.
This enables educators to devote more time to direct instruction and targeted student support rather than routine administrative tasks.
In high-demand classroom environments, such a shift can significantly enhance the level of individualized attention each student receives.
However, the integration of AI in education also raises several concerns. One major issue is the risk of overdependence.
If students become excessively reliant on AI tools to complete assignments or answer questions, they may not fully develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Over time, this could weaken their ability to analyze information independently, even if their short-term performance appears strong.
This dependence may also erode students’ confidence in their own abilities, leading them to rely on technology even when it is unnecessary.

This can create a digital divide, where some students benefit from AI tools while others are left at a disadvantage.

As more districts weigh whether to expand AI tools or pull back, the central question is how much control schools are willing to hand over, and what students might lose in the process.
While Ai holds the promise of personalizing learning and improving efficiency in the classroom, it also introduces risks related to overdependence, inequality, and misinformation.
As AI continues to advance, schools must implement it thoughtfully to ensure that it enhances learning rather than replaces essential academic skills.
