Solo sailor attempts Arctic circumnavigation for climate science

On August 13, 2026, Russia’s Northern Sea Route Administration directed American sailor Matt Rutherford to stop his voyage and turn back due to thick sea ice near Wrangel Island and forecasts of sub-zero temperatures in the Chukchi Sea and East Siberian Sea. 

This order from Russia brought an unexpected end to Rutherford’s solo sailing attempt. 

On June 25, 2026, Matt Rutherford set departed Greenland with the ambitous goal of becoming the first person in history to circumnavigate the Arctic Ocean unassisted and nonstop, a voyage of more than 10,000 nautical miles aboard his 42 foot sailboat, Chimera. 

For this expedition, the conditions were more demanding than what most sailors will ever face.

To qualify as a legitimate circumnavigation and achieve Rutherford’s ambitious goal, he was required to sail the entire route nonstop and solo. 

This meant no anchoring, no stepping ashore between his voyage, and no outside assistance of any kind. 

“It’s a hell of a challenge,” Rutherford admitted. 

“It’s interesting trying to do something that nobody has ever done because there’s nobody I can call, there’s no book I can read. I just have to figure it out,” he said.

However, the goal of his voyage extends beyond personal achievement; it is deeply intertwined with a greater cause 

Rutherford founded the Ocean Research Project, a nonprofit that has conducted and supported scientific research in Arctic waters since 2015. The circumnavigation was brought up in part as a fundraising effort to support the organization's ongoing work.

Because there was less funding for climate science in the past few years, Rutherford described the voyage as a “little side trip,” hoping to attract new donors to his Arctic research group and help fund essential repairs for their vessel. 

Another goal of this expedition is to raise awareness of the rapid loss of ice in the Arctic region. 

“The fact that I can attempt this journey at all is because there is less ice,” he said in a press release. 

Despite the setback, Rutherford emphasized that the expedition was not without value. 

The water samples that Rutherford was able to collect along his two month journey across the North Atlantic and into Baffin Bay will still contribute to the Ocean Research Project’s ongoing climate research program. 

In that regard, it can be seen that the voyage did what it set out to do, even if the full route was not completed. 

Perhaps what was more interesting about Matt Rutherford’s journey was the mere fact that this expedition circumnavigating around the Arctic Ocean was possible in the first place, as the long-term reduction of Arctic sea ice has made voyages like this more feasible for solo sailors than they would have been in the past years. 

Ultimately, the data collected for science and the global attention the voyage generated ensured that the expedition did fulfill a purpose of some sort, regardless of how it ended.
