Abbotsford police are investigating a series of fires at local school properties after three separate incidents were reported in April.

The fires occurred at Bakerview Centre for Learning and Godson Elementary School, raising concerns about school safety and the impact these incidents can have on students, families, and staff.

According to the Abbotsford Police Department, two fires were deliberately set at Bakerview Centre for Learning during the overnight hours of April 13 and April 15.

A third fire occurred on April 17, when a portable classroom at Godson Elementary School was set on fire.

Police have stated that the Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation, with support from patrol officers, the General Investigative Section, and the Forensic Identification Section.

The first two incidents occurred at Bakerview Centre for Learning, a school located on Marshall Road.

While the fires occurred outside of regular school hours, police still described the situation as serious because schools are important public spaces used by students, teachers, and community members.

The third fire, at Godson Elementary School, involved a portable classroom. Even when the extent of damage from a fire is limited, an incident at a school can create fear and uncertainty for the people who learn and work there.

On April 22, authorities arrested 34-year-old Jessie Olson.

He was later formally charged with arson in relation to the April 13 incident at Bakerview Centre for Learning.

Police further stated that he was also charged with breach of a release order connected to his arrest.

As of the April 24 police update, Olson remained in custody, while the other two arson investigations were still ongoing.

Police have not confirmed that all three fires were caused by the same person.

However, because the incidents occurred within the same week and involved school properties, investigators are continuing to examine evidence carefully.

The Abbotsford Police Department emphasized that the case remains a priority because incidents like these can affect students, families, and school staff.

The fires have sparked broader concerns about safety in the community.

Schools are traditionally considered safe places where students can learn, meet friends, and participate in activities.

When a school building is damaged or threatened, the effects can go beyond physical damage.

Students may feel nervous about returning to class, parents may worry about security, and staff may have to spend extra time responding to the situation instead of focusing only on learning.

The incidents underscore the importance of community care in maintaining public spaces.

School buildings are not only used during class time. They also serve as venues for programs, meetings, and other activities that serve the neighbourhood.

When these places are damaged, the entire community can feel the impact.

In its statement, the Abbotsford Police Department emphasized its commitment to collaborating closely with schools and community partners to help students feel safe and supported.

Police also emphasized their commitment to responding quickly to incidents that threaten students’ sense of safety.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the fires to contact the Abbotsford Police Department.

As the case continues, the main concern for many residents is ensuring that students and staff can feel safe at school once again.
